5.1 Article - Exam strategy: predicting answers

In the IELTS exam, you will always have time to analyse the questions before you listen.  You get thirty seconds to do this at the start of each section, and sometimes in the middle of a section.

However, note that at the start of the test there is always information about the format of the listening test and an example answer which is completed for you.  The recording will always play the example answer before you begin.

Here is an example:

(c) TakeIELTS British Council. Reproduced with permission.

This takes around two minutes.  However you will already have the complete listening paper in front of you.

  • Tip: Use this time to start looking through the questions for all of the sections. Start predicting answers and thinking about the topics. Use this time to get a head start.
